Did You Know?
Tractor-trailers often cause collisions with automobiles by not being aware of vehicles in one of the blind spots that exist all around the commercial motor vehicle (CMV). Too often, tractor-trailer drivers change lanes while completely unaware an automobile occupies the lane sought because a second car in that lane is quickly approaching from the rear and will consume the space needed by the tractor-trailer to change lanes. This distracts the tractor-trailer driver from the auto already in his blind spot. The Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration suggests CMV drivers check his mirrors and vehicle surroundings every 5 to 8 seconds, but they often forget or are too focused on moving into the next lane before another car takes the space. As a result, bad things happen to good people.
